Thankful to be able to give

With Thanksgiving coming up, it's easy to get wrapped up in menu plans, potluck recipes and travel plans, but the holiday also is an opportunity to think of those in the community who might not be as fortunate.

An easy way to help is to double up on some of the items on your shopping list and make a donation to your local food pantry.

This week – and likely next week, too – many local stores are running specials on canned goods and shelf stable items that could go a long way at the food pantry. I personally stocked up on canned veggies, instant potatoes and some personal hygeine items with plans to donate to a couple local drives. But a look at some of the Web sites of local pantries, shows they need much more.

A look on Crystal Lake Food Pantry's Web site gives not only details on local drives and fundraisers, but a list of special needs this month, which include:
- Ramen noodles
- Fruit cocktail
- Canned corn, potatoes or mixed vegetables
- Jello and pudding mix
- Cake mix and frosting
- Hamburger Helper
- Hot chocolate
- Single-serving items
- Hot and cold cereal

Marengo's M.O.R.E. Center (which will be profiled in the upcoming December issue of McHenry County Magazine) also has a wish list posted on its Web site with food staples, personal care items and clothing items that can help out local patrons. Their most needed items include:
- Canned fruit
- Canned meat
- Canned tomatoes and tomato sauce
- Peanut butter
- Bar soap
- Toothbrushes and toothpaste

The Northern Illinois Food Bank's Web site also has a detailed list of food pantries all over McHenry County and their contact information. Look for the one in your community and make a donation!
