Really? Yoga with your dog?
It struck my curiosity, so I just had to go check it out. A girlfriend of mine manages Equinox Fitness in Highland Park and had her first Doggy Yoga class a couple of weeks ago. She invited me to see what it was all about.
The class had about 30 people in it, and there actually was a waiting list of at least 10 people. Pretty good, I’m thinking, for the first Doggy Yoga class at the health club. It was pretty funny to see everyone parade through this high-class health club, dog in tow, headed to the yoga studio.
The instructor and her dog, Daisy, started the class by having everyone introduce their dog and where he or she came from. She then had everyone start with some exercises to relax the dogs and develop the bond with their dog. Amazingly, all the dogs lied down and relaxed to the music and the wonderful massage they were receiving. “Doggy Yoga, two paws up!” they were thinking.
She went on to have everyone do some basic yoga positions with their dogs. It was so cute and so incredible to watch the dogs participate and really enjoy the experience. All the guests had a great time with the one-on-one time they experienced with their best friend.
The class ended with a parade of everyone with their dogs, all gushing with pride, several times around the yoga studio. After class was a mini social hour, as this was the first time most members were meeting each other’s dogs. As the members were leaving, they all raved about the class and were already signing up for next month’s class. They all had so much fun, they can’t wait to do it again.
So . . . Doggy Yoga, anyone? I’m thinking about having a Doggy Yoga class once a month at Camp Bow Wow McHenry. It really is a great way to strengthen the bond between you and your dog, as well as get together and socialize with other dog lovers like yourself.
