Nothing Better Than Benedict’s

It is always a treat to walk into Benedict’s La Strada in Crystal Lake. The bustling activity and the warm, cozy atmosphere have you feeling good before you even sit down.
And as comfortable as I am there, I am always amazed at how fresh owner John Pilafas keeps this breakfast and lunch superstar.
The menu changes seasonally, which is always nice to see, but on a recent visit — just after New Year’s — posted on the specials’ board were some awesome New Year Resolution entrees.
“You have to know what people are thinking,” says Pilafas.
“This time of year, our customers want the option of meals that will honor the New Year’s diet, but [they] don’t want to sacrifice taste.”
And taste is what it’s all about at Benedict’s.
While waiting for our table, we ordered a couple of organic, free-trade coffee drinks. The coffee is as good as any coffee vendors in town and is a great pick-up to start the day.
I always seem to have great servers when I visit. On my last two trips, Bonnie and Cathy have made my family and I feel great. They are fun, kind and super accommodating — much like Larry Smith. The manager/operator is friends with everyone as he moves through the restaurant — apron on — making sure everyone is happy.
In the winter, Benedict’s is open on Friday and Saturday for dinner, although I wish they were open every night. I love coming here in the summer on Thursday nights and then catching the show next door at the Raue Center.
Pilafas and Benedict’s La Strata continue to demonstrate why they have become so popular and successful.
They are located at 40 N. Williams St. in downtown Crystal Lake, one block south of the train station, at the corner of Williams and Brink streets. For more information, call 815-459-6500.
2012 Top Trends
Just as I did last year, here are some of my predictions for the upcoming year.
• Look for smartphones to play an ever-increasing role in restaurant selection.
• Table-top computers will emerge as one of the top rising stars in the technology field as the application gets better.
• Watch the healthful kids meals segment get larger, even to the point of becoming the restaurant theme.
• Local ingredients will continue to grow, but through locally-produced beers and wines.
Keep the emails coming, and have a great 2012!
